In today’s rapidly evolving world, the design of children’s spaces has become more versatile and multi-functional. DUTS Design proudly presents its latest project, a stunning renovation of the English Giraffe space in Qiantan, Shanghai. With a focus on utilizing solid surface materials, the architects at DUTS Design have created a captivating environment that offers new and surprising experiences for children.
Creating a Functional and Engaging Space:
The original space presented a challenge due to its irregular shape, reminiscent of a deer’s head. However, the design team saw this as an opportunity to craft a unique and functional space that fulfills the fundamental needs of English Giraffe. The renovated area encompasses an open theater, a library, classrooms, a solid surface reception counter, and staff offices, all within the 630 square meters of the irregular space.
The Flowing Chapter Concept:
Guided by functionality and experiential design, the “Flowing Chapter” concept took shape. Abstract undulating flow lines became the core inspiration, seamlessly integrating an open stage, drama classroom, and library. Solid surface materials played a crucial role in enhancing the visual appeal and providing a versatile platform for learning and performance.
An Immersive Entrance Experience:
As children enter the space from the bustling square, they are greeted with a special “magic tunnel” entrance. This imaginative transition leads them to an enchanting flowing space, adorned with solid surface wall decorations. The journey begins with a sense of wonder and anticipation.
The Centerpiece: The Open Theater:
The “Open Theater” stands as the centerpiece of the space, facing the square. Crafted entirely with solid surface materials, the flowing stage offers a seamless and visually stunning environment. It serves as a partner for children to learn, rehearse, and perform. Each course concludes with a report performance, showcasing the remarkable talents of the children and bringing joy to their proud parents’ faces.
Creating Serene Reading Spaces:
Continuing with the abstract undulating flow, the reading space takes the form of a “Reading Theater.” Designed with varying heights and solid surface wall decorations, children can immerse themselves in the pleasure of reading in a serene environment.
Integrating Digital Construction Technology:
The architects at DUTS Design employed meticulous analysis and digital construction technology to achieve a natural and smooth transition between materials, curvatures, and functions of the stage. The use of solid surface elements ensures a cohesive design that harmonizes with the furniture and floor patterns, providing a unified and multi-level experience unique to this space. Furthermore, digital architect technology enables accurate representation of the design and efficient construction, optimizing both costs and solid surface integrity.
